Odd Ends, Odds and Ends, and Ends are Odd.

A random smattering of thoughts while taking in Monday Night Football…
The Bills really played an excellent game yesterday. Everyone is gushing about Roscoe Parrish’s kick return, and that was awesome, but personally, I love the fake field goal call! It may be rose-colored glasses, but I swear that during the “glory years” of the Bills in the late 80’s and early 90’s, they used to run those gadget and trick plays all the time, with great success. Then the next progression of coaches got away from that, and now Dick Jauron and Bobby April are bringing it back. Even better, according to Ryan Denney, they were actually sitting on that play, and were going to run it earlier in the game! Love it!
Speaking of football, I jumped into a just-for-fun fantasy league with Pat and Jodi and a couple of their friends, and even though it’s only been 1 week, I love it! It was an auto-draft (which to me is better and more equitable), so its up to you to tweak the roster once you get it, whoever you end up with. Of course, I had a pretty good team right off the hop, including Tony Romo, Randy Moss, and Marshawn Lynch, but I’m really enjoying the aspect of catching highlights of other games to see how your players have done, how this weeks opponents’ players have done, etc. I end up paying attention to the other games more, as opposed to just the Bills. I think I may have to set up a fantasy hockey league this year, what with all the games I watch there!
I’ve been playing with Google Chrome for awhile now, and I generally like it, but one of the oddest things is how it’s a little goofy with Google’s own (RSS feed) Reader. If you scroll down in the reading pane, it will sometimes also scroll down in the feed list pane, which is kind of annoying. Also, the “sandbox” concept that they’re pushing generally works (I’ve had Flash crash once or twice and it just affected that tab), but it seems like if something holds up processing on one tab, it paralyzes the whole browser until it either finishes, times out, or whatever. The machine isn’t frozen (you can alt-tab out of the browser), but you can’t switch tabs, which sucks. Plus I’m not sure if I’m fond of the combined search and address box yet. My jury is still out on that one.
Does anyone else think that Labatt has the best marketing gimmick ever, putting hats inside the 2-4 cases? I thought the Sabres hats were a smart idea, I liked the retro Labatt logo hats (even though I didn’t get one of those), and I just killed two birds with one stone on Sunday, picking up a 2-4 and since I wanted/needed (yes, it’s a need!) a new Bills hat, I’m all set! I realize that Labatt moved their U.S. distribution to Buffalo due to something like a full 25% of all beer sold in WNY, but still, they know how to pander to their target market!
NHL2k9 for the Wii comes out tomorrow! Finally, a real hockey game for the Wii, and the promos make it look like it’ll fully utilize the wiimote and the nunchuck attachment. Can’t wait! (Can’t wait for hockey season either… but more on that in a future post!)

A New Woo, and New Beer Too!
By Woopop | August 27, 2008 12:16 pm
So as you can see, Great Lakes Brewing finally has started distributing in New York. This is pretty awesome, and even more awesome was the place I picked it up, our new Wegmans on the corner of Calkins and East Henrietta Road (that replaces the old one across the street). One step down from the behemoth that is the Pittsford location, it’s still a damn sight better than our usual Hylan Dr. location. Yay for progress! We went Sunday for the grand opening, like the idiots we are, and of course, it was nuts. But fun!

We conquered both the Beerfest and East End Feast last night. That’s pretty much our nightlife quota for the month :)

It’s Prom Night, Hooray Beer! Or Not.

NORTH TONAWANDA: Prom incident draws attention
The article is about kids post-prom getting busted for drinking at Chautauqua Gorge State Park. Wow. Is anyone surprised? Those dangerous and bad kids! Um, no. Even the dorks do it. EVERYONE does it. I was almost kinda hoping it was at Allegheny instead, so I could be the cynical bastard and point my finger and say HAHA YOU GOT BUSTED YOU SCHMUCKS, WE DIDN’T! We were dorks and even we went camping after prom to throw back some beers. That’s all that was going on at Allegheny our prom weekend! And that was before they moved the prom away from Memorial Day weekend, so we had an extra day! They took that away from the kids too, to “curb excessive parties”. Uh huh. In our case, no one got busted, no one did anything exceedingly stupid, and our campground was far from the only one. Our little group traveled down the hill to at least three other campsites to party. But I digress.
In reality though, the article gets one point right, although I don’t think they realized it. The underage drinking and the prom aren’t mutually exclusive. From the article:
…he said figures obtained from police detail the individuals involved and indicate only a weak link between prom attendees and individuals cited for, among other things, underage drinking in the park the same night.
That’s because there’s going to be underage drinking on the weekend no matter what, prom or not. Because the hypocritical baby-boomers made it “forbidden” and “while you’re technically an adult, you can drive, and then at 18 you can vote, but you want to have a beer? NOT YOURS.” Yep. That makes tons of sense. ‘Course, it was okay when you did it, and that was all well and good. It’s like anything else with kids, if you take the mystery out of it early (i.e. controlled drinking/sampling with parental supervision, starting at say, 15 or 16, and then full privileges at 18), there’ll be far less binging (and the hiding of said binging) by “underage” kids, because its not secret and cool. (I put it in quotes because, to me, at 18, you shouldn’t be underage for anything anymore.) But no, we’ll just expect you to flip a switch and become instantly responsible with no prior alcohol experience on your 21st birthday. Good deal.
Of course, those of us near the Ontario border got our two years of legal practice in. Thanks Niagara Falls!!
