02/16/2012 Shadows Fall, Hate Machine, Order of the Dead, Armed With Valor, Fleshburn (Rochester, NY @ Montage Music Hall)

A rare Thursday night show, this had the Shads doing a short run to warm up for some overseas festivals, sort of a DIY tour. Since they’re based in Boston, they used a van+trailer, and an SUV and drove themselves to Rochester, Syracuse, Albany and back to Mass. Anyway, we got to see ‘em! I didn’t catch too much of the first two bands on, but the direct support was a treat. For whatever reason, I never got to see Hate Machine (or even Omniblank, for that matter) during their nu-metal heyday around the late 90′s and early 2000′s, even though they were a Rochester band. What’s 12 years? I can see why they had some popularity, I felt like I was at practically any nu-metal show from that era, and these guys sounded GOOD. Big local following for them, and that made for a great show. Makes me nostalgic for that stuff haha. So after Hate Machine, the Shads were up, and one may as well have called it a greatest hits set, which was just fine with everyone there. We even got to hear one new song, the title track from the new album “Fire From The Sky”, and that went back-to-back with my favorite, King of Nothing. The guys sounded great, had a ton of fun up on stage, looked like they were happy to be out playing again, and the crowd was into it all night as well. Good times.
