09/20/2003 Sevendust (Rochester, NY @ Water Street Music Hall)

By Woopop | September 20, 2003

Sevendust decided to close out their mini acoustic tour in Rochester, and Jason, Colin, Tiff and I were there to see it. We got up into the balcony, which was great for this show due to the fact that there was no opener. Instead, the entire new Sevendust album was played over the PA. No visuals, no nothing. Makes me ecstatic that we were sitting comfortably upstairs instead of standing on the floor. So after that was over, the boys came out, and roched harder with acoustics than I’ve seen some bands rock electrics!! First surprise of the night… Lajon cut his dreads off!!! Sure looked different, no doubt. They opened with Trust, and played some more of the subdued numbers off of Animosity, including Xmas Day, Beautiful, Angel’s Son, and Follow. A healthy mix of some of the new tunes, and a couple of covers as well, just for fun, The best example of this was easily Purple Rain. Yes, Prince! Lajon brings out a gold microphone, and jokes about how he got it from Prince in Indy. The guys attempted Eye Of The Tiger once or twice, Metallica’s Master Of Puppets, and also did (now follow this!) a cover of Johnny Cash’s cover of NIN’s Hurt. (They played Hurt. Much easier!!) Switching back to their own stuff, they tore up the place with Rumblefish, Black, Prayer, and then attempted Home, but LJ was in the wrong key, and tried to take it waaaaaaaayy too high, before stopping and just about falling over from laughter! During the encore, some kid got up, and LJ let him propose to his girlfriend up on stage! Oddly enough, this came right before the last song of the night, “Bitch”. Coincidence? heheh. In any event, the show was stellar, and the guys were having nothing but fun up on stage, as usual, and sent us home happy!

There’s a Real Magic TV clip that has a scene from this show here.
