Review: After hearing how good Ascendancy was, I had high hopes for this record. Suffice to say I was let down a bit. Apparently all the low screaming wasn’t good for Matt Heafy’s voice, so most of the screaming from the first two albums is gone. Not that I mind clean singing, but there are definitely times here where I miss it. Most of the songs are well crafted, but at times, instead of sounding like an homage to bands, it sounds like a direct rip-off. Case in point, the whole opening sequence of “Unrepentant” is a cover of Metallica’s “Through The Never”, and then the intro for “The Rising” sounds like it’d be more at home on a Tesla record. Having said all that, there are songs that I like, including The Rising, and Contempt Breeds Contamination. Some of the lyrics sound like attempts at creating fantasy worlds, ala the British metal bands of the early 80’s. All in all, it’s not a bad record, but Ascendancy was much better.
